For the Pizza Sauce

No need to cook this sauce long - just enough to marry the flavors like a swift handshake between old shipmates

Ingredients

  • 15 ounces tomato sauce (1 can)
  • 6 ounces tomato paste (1 can)
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ cup chopped cooked onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine tomato sauce and tomato paste in a medium saucepan, whisking until smooth.
  2. Add oregano, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add cooked onions if using.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
  5. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until flavors meld together.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using on pizza, or cool completely for storage.

Notes

This quick sauce is ready faster than you can say “pieces of eight” - perfect when the crew demands pizza on short notice. The beauty lies in its simplicity; no lengthy cooking required since the flavors bloom quickly. This bounty keeps in the ship’s stores for up to a week when chilled, or freeze in portions for up to 3 months. For a smoother sauce, give it a whirl with an immersion blender. Makes enough precious cargo for 2-3 large pizzas or 4-5 personal sized ones.
